Governor Schwarzenegger signs new law that could give homeowners up to $500 to remove water softeners

Summary: 9/12/2006 - SB 475 allows for cash rebates to encourage the removal of water softeners to achieve compliance with state mandates to protect water resources.

Sacramento, CA  - 9/12/ 2006-  Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Senate Bill 475 giving the Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District a new tool to reduce chloride in wastewater. The District will provide a new rebate of up to $500 offering reasonable value for voluntary removal of automatic water softeners.

"SB 475 creates an expanded program to encourage the removal of water softeners in order to achieve compliance with state mandates in the most economical way," said Senator George Runner ( R-Antelope Valley ). The legislation is designed to protect the citizens from 400% wastewater rate increases."

This law creates a precedent which would allow other communities in California and all over the country to institute similar measures to protect the environment.
